- Take advantage of your outdoor environment. During the winter months, you will want to allow your windows to take in direct sunlight in order to benefit from natural heat so you can minimize your heating system, but be sure to close the blinds during the evening hours to reduce the chill your windows will provide from the cold air outside. During the hotter months, the internal temperature rises due to sunlight coming in directly through windows, so either close the blinds or consider investing in new ways to shade your home or building, such as adding awnings or planting trees to obstruct sunlight. Following through with these measures can reduce your cooling bill up to 30% during the warmer months.
- Keep an eye on all of your vents, heaters, warm-air registers and radiators. You can improve the effectiveness of your HVAC system by making sure your vents are free of obstacles such as couches, furniture or chairs and have been cleaned of dust every so often to make sure clean air is being circulated throughout your home or business.
- When the warmer weather rolls around, make sure that your HVAC system’s filter is replaced with a new one. Filters are relatively cheap, and swapping out old dirty ones with new clean ones can improve the air quality and air flow quite a bit which will come in handy when the weather outside gets especially hot. It would also be advisable to have a professional technician perform maintenance on your air-conditioning unit to ensure that it will be running at peak levels during the cooling season.
